Understanding W3C
Standards for the World Wide Web are developed in an international consortium which is known as the World Wide Web Consortium. The purpose of developing these standards and protocols is to establish and ensure the long term growth of the web. Another major aim of W3C is to maintain a certain level of conformity within the web design and the development community.
Whereas on the one side you have the W3C setting up the protocols you have on the other side people rejecting their efforts all together. Hence we find that the web development industry is divided regarding the standards and limitations imposed by the W3C. The safest and best thing to do in order to avoid getting into any trouble is to take W3C compliance into consideration while designing and developing on the web. This will greatly help to minimize any errors on your web site.
The different aspects of W3C compliance
There is however a catch in trying to comply with the standards and limitations of W3C. This is that fact that you may have to make certain sacrifices to fit within the perimeters they have set. This involves giving up some functions and even design aspects. Otherwise you will run the risk of having some people unable to view your website properly.
There is however certain fundamental benefits of having a web site that is W3C compliant. The first and foremost amongst them is the fact that you will have a W3C badge on displayed on any validated page. This gives a good impression to the customer about the website owner who comes across as a responsible person or organization. It can be taken as an indication of your business ethics as well.
It is when you weigh the benefits of complying with W3C with the limitations that it imposes on you that you realize what is better. The backward compatibility of your website will be restricted as users will be unable to view it on browsers like Netscape 4.X or Morzilla Firefox.
Some users may have difficulty in viewing certain functions on your website. This also depends upon browser settings. W3C settings are known to pose limitations regarding certain browsers. You can however use code programming to over come this problem. It is however important to understand both the benefits and limitations that W3C places on you prior to deciding whether to comply with the standards or not.
