CSS getting hard to swallow
It has been more than a decade since the Cascading Style Sheets were first introduced to the world of the web. The W3C in 1997 was when CSS was formally introduced to the public. Since then CSS has gradually progressed towards establishing it self as an authority over other methods of its kind.
Although CSS does have many benefits for designers and developers it has received a mixed response from the public. To be fair we should say that the public has been slow to accept CSS as the standard. Graphic designers in particular have been turned off by the incapability of CSS to be used to create complex designs. The bad thing about CSS is that it is not universally cross browser compatible.
The cross browser difficulties have improved over time as new and improved versions have developed. To overcome this problem designers have developed a new approach which is actually a hybrid standard. This includes making use of CSS for styling text but the use of nested tables is continued for the purpose of structuring the page. As a result designers have more stability and control.
This practice is however only common amongst those designers that do not find the time or energy to learn advanced CSS. This is because all that they complain about including the inability to create complex design through CSS is in fact untrue. Advanced CSS can be used to create the most complex designs.
The problem is that in order to make good use of CSS you have to learn the new language and develop a skill. CSS is also known to be really fast when it comes to loading and scrolling the web pages but this quality is greatly diminished when CSS is used in combination with nested tables.
The problem is two fold. On the one side we know that CSS can be used to create complex design and on the other we find that clients are by and large unwilling to pay the heavy cost of getting a website designed completely on CSS. Slowly however people have become more accepting towards CSS and it is gradually making its mark on the world of the web.
Some big hurdles still stand in the way of CSS which greatly hinder its popularity. The popularity of Macromedia Flash as a design tool is one of those things that have hampered the progress.
